Eight months, 800+ entrants and more than 1,500 designs later – it’s over to the judges!

The curtain has officially closed on our $50,000 Design Competition, with all entries now in the hands of our judging panel.

To everyone who took the time to come up with an idea, put it on paper and send it our way – thank you.

Now to the tricky part…

With entries closed, the fun (and hard) job now belongs to our judging panel.

They’ll work their way through the mountain of designs, eventually compiling their shortlists and deciding our winners.

There’s plenty to weigh up. Each design will be judged on its artistic merit, originality, relevance to the brief and suitability for modern coin production. We won’t be rushing them!

You can expect an update from us in February 2027. Winners will be contacted by phone and email.

Partnering with the Royal Australian Mint

While the competition itself is done and dusted, we’re not putting the other 1,000-odd designs in a drawer and forgetting about them!

Plans are underway for the Royal Australian Mint to house a selection of designs in their museum gallery, celebrating the creativity and artistry throughout the entries.

So, if you’re in Canberra, keep an eye out next time you’re at the Mint. Further details will be shared as plans take shape.

For now, to all entrants: thank you, and good luck!

The original comp that launched a legend.

In the December 1966 issue a competition was announced calling for enthusiasts to submit their best designs for a new ‘crown-sized’ coin of Australia.

The competition, which attracted interest and entrants worldwide, was the first of its kind and offered financial prizes that were potentially life-changing at the time.

In 2024, to celebrate our 60th birthday, we re-struck the original design to the exact mintage as before.
