Australia's most sought-after 'coin' struck again in 60-year celebration
In the December 1966 issue of the ACR, John Gartner, founding owner and editor of the magazine, planted the first seed of what has since become one of Australia’s most popular and sought-after numismatic icons.
A competition was announced calling for enthusiasts to submit their best designs for a new ‘crown-sized’ coin of Australia. After months of entries and judging, the iconic ‘Swan’ design from Andor Meszaros was chosen as winner.
This year, in celebrating 60 years of the ACR, a re-strike of the famous ‘Swan Dollar’ has been commissioned through the Royal Australian Mint. Featuring the exact same mintages as the original release, this announcement has generated enormous excitement amongst the collecting community.
One major variation in the 60th anniversary release is the addition of a Brilliant Uncirculated AlZnBr striking of the 2024 Swan Dollar (pictured).
As a gift to our loyal supporters, every new and current subscriber to the ACR will receive a limited edition ‘Subscribers Issue’ of the Aluminium-Bronze Swan for free! Subscribe to secure your coin today.

Welcome to the Australian Coin Review.
As a long-time supporter of the magazine, it has been my honour and privilege to take the reigns as the magazine’s editor, and the opportunity to continue the growth of this iconic Australian publication is not lost on me.
Whilst preparing some content for the new website, I went through the process of creating a timeline of the magazine’s history all the way back to July 1964. Over 60 years many things have changed, including ownership countless times, however at its core the magazine has always remained the same, and our team is excited to continue the magazine’s mission to serve collectors and bring the numismatic community together.
The ACR 2.0 has been completely redesigned and reimagined with improvements to layout, printing, and paper stock quality. We have also appointed new contributors with fresh new content and perspectives, while the old guard are still present, accounted for, and incredibly supportive.
While work is still to be done, we are exceptionally proud to have completed building a digital library of the magazine’s back-catalogue, providing subscribers and researchers with access to more than 600 historic issues, an invaluable resource that will serve as a fantastic asset for the future of the magazine.
Alongside growing digital assets, a new dimension we have introduced is a community-based ACR Facebook Group, acting as a marketplace and central hub for the Australian numismatic community where clubs, societies, and associations can advertise meetings and upcoming trade shows, and authors, contributors, and editors can discuss and review published articles.
I would like to thank my amazing team, along with the contributors and subscribers who have been overwhelmingly supportive in the development of the ACR 2.0. It has been a pleasure so far and I very much look forward to working together in the future.
This really is just the beginning of the new magazine, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our growing community.
